The March of
Dimes is a not-for-profit organization. It’s mission is to improve the health
of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, infant mortality and the
health of mothers. The foundation has 51 chapters across the U.S., including the
District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The March of Dimes provides mothers, pregnant
women and women of childbearing age with educational resources on baby health, pregnancy,
preconception and new motherhood, as well as supplying information and support to
families affected by prematurity, birth defects, or other infant health problems.
The foundation was formed in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a response
to the U.S. epidemics of polio. Their mission was reformulated in 1958 when the
original goal of eliminating polio was accomplished. Currently the focus is on their
Prematurity campaign, which is a push on the awareness about premature birth and
the associated causes.
