The Versatility of E-learning

Does it ever seem like there isn’t enough time in the day to accomplish everything on your list? It often feels like you are navigating your way through a never-ending pile of junk, and some days you feel like you need multiple medications to just make it through. You know what I’m talking about. Add education on top of that pile, and you feel like you are being attacked by a plethora of piranhas. Education does not have to be a frustrating, time-consuming task.

E-learning is convenient, easy to use, and most importantly, it allows the student to learn on their own without the time constraints of a human instructor. At PQC, we utilize our top of the line e-learning program for clients who may not have the time to train their associates face to face. But e-learning is more than just a system that consulting firms use. The versatility of an e-learning system is vast, the system can be used for much more than solely curriculum based material, and e-learning software is becoming increasingly attainable to the general public.

A recent example of how versatile e-learning can be comes from Canada. Commissioner Bob Paulson of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) wants to mold Canada’s next generation of law enforcement into excellence. RCMP plans on using e-learning as a tool for instilling better habits within the force. The focus will be placed on top commanders, but there will also be emphasis on the importance of fostering the younger leaders who may not have as much experience as the top commanders.

The purpose of the e-learning system for the RCMP is to educate the men in the force about the importance of professionalism and etiquette. Recent complaints from the female RCMP department of sexual harassment have helped launch this campaign for e-learning. They are looking to expand the program to include possible courses such as “Developing an Agenda for Change,” and “Mobilizing for Change.” The overall hope for this e-learning program is that up and coming RCMP officers will acquire leadership skills while located at various detachments throughout Canada.

Another industry that is actively using e-learning software is the healthcare industry. Hospitals use e-learning to help train and retrain new associates, and for new medical equipment. An example of this is the cobas academy e-learning tool from Roche, used by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to help meet CPA standards. The Foundation originally used this program in December 2010 for glucose meters.

Shortly thereafter, they realized that they could use the cobas academy tool to train their staff since there were simply too many to allow for face-to-face training. This program makes training and retraining possible from the wards so the staff does not have to leave for an extended amount of time. The staff can also access the program whenever they have time, instead of adhering to a strict class schedule.

Technology giant, Apple Inc. is also jumping onto the e-learning bandwagon. Apple has proposed replacing textbooks with electronic versions in iPad apps, called “e-texts.” Don’t get too excited college students, this proposal is currently only for high school textbooks. These “e-texts” are viewable with the free iBooks application. These electronic textbooks will cost about $15 or less for the schools. This is significantly less than hardbound textbooks, which can cost up to $105 per book. The iBooks application from Apple will save schools across the nation hundreds of thousands of dollars.

At PQC International, we recognize the value of e-learning. Our online program provides all the characteristics of quality web-learning software including convenience and ease of access. Our clients look to us to provide them with the most up-to-date services and training. Our e-learning program is one of the many ways PQC helps improve the quality of your business and the associates that make the company strong.
